SOC 10 - Preventing Injury Flashcards
Concussion
A mild head injury caused by a blow to the head or sudden movement of it (whiplash) - symptoms can be dizziness or even slur of speach
Fracture
A broken or cracked bone that can be a result of a blow - several types of fractures such as compound, inclosed, simple and stress
Dislocation
When a bone at a joint is forced out of its normal position - symptoms can be pain or discomfort aswell as the area looking out of place
Torn cartilage
Cartilage is a firm elastic substance which lines adjoining bones, it absorbs the impact from the bones during sport or activity
Sprain
A damaged ligament, normally seen after stretching too far past the joints range of motion.
Strain
A twist, tear or pull of a muscle or tendon - most commonly seen in hamstrings and backs. Golfers elbow and tennis elbow is an example of this.
Soft tissue injury
Joints are where two or more bones meet. They are prone to injury beacause movements past the range of motion can tear or pull tendons and ligaments easily
Abrasion
Grazes or cuts formed through the friction of skin against a rough surface - can occur from a tackle or even falling over.
In closed fracture
The break doesnt pearce the skin
Compound fracture
The broken bone protrudes through the skin
Simple fracture
Takes place in one line, no displacement of the bone
Stress fracture
Overuse injury - can be a result of fatigue to the bone
