SOC 12: Flashcards
What are the 5 functions of the skeletal system?
Protection of organs
Muscle attachments
Joints for movement
Strong calcium and phosphorus
Red and white blood cell production
The 5 sections of the vertebrae
Cervical ( first 7 bones )
Thoracic ( next 12 bones )
Lumbar ( next 5 bones )
Sacrum ( next 5 fused bones )
Coccyx ( final 4 fused bones )
Long bones
Longer than they are wide
Small bones like finger bones are still long bones
Used to generate movement ( leavers )
Examples are: ulna, radius, femur, tibia, fibula and humerus
Short bones
Used for weight bearing
Only short bones are carpals in the wrist and tarsals in the foot
Irregular bones
Used for protection and muscle attachment
Example is the vertebrae protecting the spinal cord
Flat bones
Used for protection and muscle attachment
Protect organs and the flat surface allows muscles to attach onto it
The ribs protect the heart
Examples are: sternum, patella, pelvis, cranium and clavicle
Humerus
Upper arm
Radius
Outside of your lower arm
Ulna
Inside of your lower arm
Tibia
Central bone in your lower leg ( shin )
Fibula
Outside of your tibia or lower leg
Femur
Upper leg ( largest bone in body )
Carpals
Around the wrist
Tarsals
Back side of your foot
