SOC: 10 Flashcards
How can the use of the correct principles of training prevent injury?
Can prevent overuse injury
Why do we wear protective equipment?
To prevent injury e.g: cricket helmet or pads
How do you fully prevent injury in sports ( 5 factors )
Correct application of the principles of training
Correct application and adherence to the rules
Use of appropriate protective clothing
Checking of equipment and facilities
Use of a warm-up and cool-down
Why do we warm up and cool down?
To allow the person to access the most amount of oxygen and get rid of lactic acid to prevent injury
RICE
Rest : stop playing or training
Ice : the cold can prevent pain relief and new blood will be flushed through
Compress : use pressure to hold the ice pack on the injury
Elevate : raise the injury at ideally above the person’s heart as this will minimise swelling
2 ways people get injured
Overuse : overusing a muscle
Acute : an action of foul play that can immediately injure someone
What is a soft tissue injury?
Joints are where two or more bones meet. They are particularly prone injury because movement outside of their normal range. They can be a tear or overstretched tendons, ligaments, muscles and cartilage.
Sprain
A sprain is a damaged ligament. One of the most common sprains in sport is a twisted or overstretched ankle
Strain
A strain is a twist, tear or overstretched muscle or a tendon
Torn cartilage
Cartilage is a firm elastic substance which lines adjoining bones. It absorbs the impact on the bones while reducing the friction during sports/ activity
Fractures
A fracture is a broken or a cracked bone. There are several types of fractures including:
● Stress fractures (overuse injuries): They can happen as a result of fatigue.
● Compound fractures: the broken bone protrudes through the skin.
● In closed: the skin over the break is not damaged.
● Simple fracture: takes place with no displacement of the bone
Dislocation
A dislocation is when a bone at a joint is forced out of its normal position.
Often occurs as a result of a hard blow which causes one of the bones to be displaced
Abrasions
Abrasions or grazes can be caused by friction of the skin against a rough surface e.g. a concrete playground or artificial pitches
Concussion
An impact to the head causes unconsciousness, confusion or memory loss
Normally caused by a blow to the head and can happen in many sports
