Sniff Sniff Flashcards
What is the bone plate that small clusters of axons penetrate?
Cribriform plate
What are the three main cells types in the OE? (Olfactory epithelium)
Olfactory receptor cells, supporting cells (make mucus), basal cells (stem cells)
Are the receptors on the soma or the cilia of the olfactory receptor neuron?
Cilia
What does mucus do for smell?
Dissolves odorants to start signal transduction
Describe an olfactory axon
Thin and unmyelinated
What is the G-olf stimulate once an odorant binds to it?
Adenylyl Cyclase, it creates cAMP
What does increased cAMP cause?
Opening of cAMP gated Na+ and Ca2+ channels
What does the Ca2+ do when it enters the cell?
Activates Cl- ion channels which cause Cl- to rush out
What causes responses to terminate?
odorant diffusing away or adaptation
What are glomeruli?
Where ORNs with similar gene expression cluster
Where are the glomeruli found?
Olfactory nerve
Where do glomeruli send info?
2nd order ORNs (mitral cells)
What is the major pathway of smell?
OE - > O Bulb -> Piriform cortex (3 layered cortex for smell)
What is another area the O bulb sends info? (Think emotions)
Limbic system
What is the inability to smell called?
Anosmia
