Small ruminant parasitic infections Flashcards
damalinia ovis better known as
sheep lice
small amounts are no issue but bad infestation becomes problematic.
treat with pour on antiparasitics like deltamethrin
melophagus ovinus better known as
sheep ked, very annoying and itchy
direct contact transmission
try to eradicate if poss.
treat with 5ml deltamethrin spot-on when sheep freshly shorn, whole flock on the same day. again in 2 weeks.
psoroptes ovis better known as
sheep mange
very contagious, can also cause allergic reaction
not found in the nordics
describe liver flukes in sheep
fasciola hepatica
very infectious, endemic in some regions 100% prevalence.
only zoonotic if you eat raw liver or drink larvae.
snails are intermediates, wet paddocks predispose sheep to infection.
anemia, bottle jaw, wasting in sheep indicate
GI nematodes, depending on the region of the world -> fasciola hepatica
treat with albendazole if in the baltics
dicrocoelium dendriticum also known as
lancet fluke
ant intermediate
zoonotic if you eat raw liver or ants
not super pathological to sheep, maybe decreased fertility and weights
avoid wet paddocks
moniezia expansa, moniezia benedeni also known as
sheep tapeworm
visible in feces
soil mite intermediate host
all over the world, at least half of flocks are infected. not super harmful to sheep production, no point to treat, just keep it under control with ploughing.
dictyocaulus filaria, muellerius capillaris also known as
sheep lungworms
verminous bronchitis is
parasitic bronchitis
dictyocaulus filaria lives in
the trachea, bronchi, bronchioles
adult sheep usually develop resistance
GI nematodes in sheep
are usually mixed infections of Bunostomum, Cooperia, Haemonchus, Nematodirus, Esophagostomum, Ostertagia, Trichostrongylus
migration either simple (straight to GI tract) or complex (to GI tract via other organs)
larvae can do hypobiosis
there’s a vaccine for a common sheep parasite. which parasite?
Haemonchus contortus, the barber’s pole worm (product Barbervax)
Barbervax immunity works in a different way from naturally acquired immunity and because it is not boosted by natural exposure, lasts for only 6 weeks after the sheep has been primed by a series of 3 vaccinations.
“Standard vaccination of lambs with a naturally exposed antigen of adult H. contortus (Hc23) and a recombinant version, rHc23, has shown to elicit 70–80% reductions of fecal egg excretion and abomasal helminth burdens after experimental challenge.”
whats a male sheep castrated before sexual maturity called?
