SLT(socail Learning Theory) PEEL Flashcards

1
Q

How does SLT have real world application

A

Has relatively little application to treatment
The principles of modelling + observational learning
Can be useful to explain negative behaviours like aggression can be learned through influence
Dysfunctional role models

Q

How is SLT soft determinism

A

Forward motion of reciprocal determinism
As well as being influenced by the environment
We also exert some influence upon it through behaviours we choose to perform
Behaviour is determined by observation of others (vicarious reinforcement)
Behaviour is largely a product of our experience (determinism)

Learning process provides the tools to conduct a particular behaviour it is up to the individual how + when they apply these tools

Q

How is SLT reductionist

A

Reduces complex learning to a handful of key process (imitating modelling) though they do at least place emphasis on cognitive factors that mediate learning and how they interact with external forces

Q

How does SLT help psychology as a science

A

Positively committed to scientist methods as its research investigations are reliable and allow inferences about cause and effect to be drawn
Research tends to be carried out in rather artificial settings
Can lack validity in terms of real life behaviours

Q

Is SLT nature or nurture and why

A

Argues the origins of behaviour is primarily nurture is that people learn as a result of observing others
It is generally assumed that the capacity to learn from observation of others has some adaptive value
And is likely to be innate
