SLT ao3 Flashcards
Research support
1961 bandura - supports when given opportunity and child identifies with model, they imitate observed aggressive behaviour. 1963 supports importance of vicarious reinforcement. Highly controlled lab study shows clear cause and effect.
Artificial
Being aggressive towards a doll does not have the sa,e implications as being aggressive towards another person e.g. doll can’t hit back. Not ecological valid, no interaction between child and model. Not generalisable
Useful real life application
Films rated to limit exposure of film to certain ages. Prevents young children imitating violent inappropriate behaviour through observation as they are not exposed it. Positive changes to society
Can explain real life cases
James Bulger. Exposure : child’s play movie
Retention : shocking and recently seeen.
Motor reproduction: had tools and opportunity and bigger than James.
Motivation: movie glorified.
Less reductionist than behaviourism.
Incorporates the cognitive approach. Human thought processes that occur between observation and imitation- retention in mediational process. Less of stimulus response mechanism.
Not fully holistic
Ignores biological theory that evolution caused characteristics to be passed down. And genes affect behaviour. Not fully comprehensive theory
