Psychodynamic Ao1 Flashcards
1
All our behaviour and feelings powerfully affected by unconscious motives - things were unaware of. E.g. fears, violent motives, unacceptable sexual desires. Unconscious thoughts reveal red in form of parapraxes - slips of tongue
3 personalities
Personality divided into 3 parts
The Id: unconscious mind - insatiable and selfish. Based on pleasure principle.
Superego: last part of personality to develop through socialisation. Concerned with morals - guilt and anxiety derived from here
Ego : based on reality principle - rational, balanced demands of id and superego
Ego defence mechanism
Psychodynamic conflict between id and superego causes anxiety. Ego unconsciously reduces this by ego defence mechanisms
E,g, displacement - one diverts their emotions from original source towards less dangerous one
Oedipus complex.
Boy begins to have sexual desires for his mother, starts to fear that his wish for his father , who sexually possess her, to go away, will cause his father to punish him by castrating him. To reslove this conflict, he repressed these feelings and starts to identify with his father and take on his morals, becoming more like him whilst developing superego. Eventually displaces desire for mother into other women
Psychosexual stages of development
- Oral stage - focus on mouth.
- Anal stage from 1 to 3.
- Phallic stage until 6. Goes through Oedipus complex.
- Latency period until puberty- boys and girls stop playing together.
- Genital stage until rest of our lives.
Any conflict during these stages can lead to fixation e.g. nail biting from oral stage
