Slide 23/24 Flashcards
Define meta populations
Made up of small, isolated groups
Three major factors of metapopulations
- Number of geographical configurations for local patches
- Similar environmental conditions over local patches
- Migration rate between local patches
Equation for equilibrium proportion of occupied patches
phat = 1 - E/m
E: rate of extinction
M: rate of migration
Inter specific vs intra specific
Inter: between individuals of different species (eg. competition)
Intra: between individuals of same species (eg. mating behavior)
Fill in chart
Mutualism, Commensalism, Predation/Prasitism, Competition
Example of mutualism
Ants get nectar fro acacia tree (food, habitat-defense)
Example of commensalism
Egrets and african buffalo
Explain niche overlap between two species and their survivorship
Complete niche overlap: one species must go
Partial: both can live
Fundamental vs realized niche
