- disturbance - any issue that disrupts an individual’s normal sleep wake cycle
e.g. sleep-wake cycle shift in adolescence, jet lag - disorder - sleep disturbances are more persistent and serious causing distress/dysfunction in everyday life

- disruption to the sleep-wake cycle primarily due to a mismatch between an individual’s cycle and the desired cycle

- sleep-wake cycle is significantly later (2+ hours) than what is desired
- sleep-onset insomnia, difficulty awakening at desired time and excessive sleepiness
- for at least 1 month
- 2 weeks or more of subjective sleep data

Advanced Sleep Phase Syndrome

- sleep schedule consistently runs earlier than desired
- inability to stay awake and inability to remain asleep until desired
- for at least 3 months
- polysomnographic monitoring between a 24-36 hour period
