Evidence Based Interventions Flashcards

1
Q

Benzodiazepines

(3)

A
  • GABA agonists that mimic the effects of GABA by binding to the specific GABA receptor sites of the post synaptic neuron
  • strengthen GABA’s inhibitory effects, reducing likelihood of the postsynaptic neuron to fire
  • reduces physiological arousal, intensity of fear responses and levels of anxiety

Q

Breathing Retraining

(4)

A
  • identifying incorrect breathing patterns and replacing them with correct ones
  • corrects imbalance of oxygen and carbon dioxide caused by hyperventilation
  • involves teaching someone to consciously control/slow their breath
  • reduces physiological arousal associated with fear

Q

Cognitive Behavioural Therapy

(3)

A
  • switching from maladaptive ABC’s to adaptive ABC’s
cognitive - identify and understand their anxious, unrealistic thoughts related to the phobia and challenge these thoughts, learning to replace them with more realistic, positive ones
behavioural - may include systematic desensitisation or breathing retraining
  • must create a link between the change in thoughts causing a change in behaviour or vice versa

Q

Systematic Desensitation

(3)

A
  • replaces anxiety/fear response with a relaxation response when exposed to phobic stimulus
  • less effective if phobia was not precipitated by CC, e.g. performance/evolutionary survival fears
    1. teaches relaxation technique
    2. create a anxiety/fear hierarchy
    3. gradually work up hierarchy, repeatedly pairing (UCS) relaxation technique and (CS) of phobic stimulus to elicit (UCR) relaxation response and only progressing once the current level elicits relaxation
    4. completed until most feared stimulus elicits (CR) relaxation response not fear response

Q

Psychoeducation

(3)

A
  • explanation of information regarding the mental disorder and coping strategies to the individual and their supporters
  • challenging unrealistic/anxious thoughts
  • not encouraging avoidance behaviours - which impair everyday functioning and decrease distress to family/friends by phobic responses.
