Phyllis Wheatly
- Born as a slave
- Was educated by her master
- Became the 2nd ever woman and 1st ever African American to publish a book which she published at the age of 14
James Forten
born free; became an outspoken activitst for the emancipation of slavery; in 1800, he organized a petition and delivered it to Congress that called for the emancipation of all slaves
Gabriel Prosser 1800
- Literate and enslaved blacksmith.
- Planned the 1st major slave rebellion (in Virginia).
- Goals: overtake the capital, convince Governor James Monroe to support political, social, and economic equality.
- Him and his 26 companions were hanged.
- Outcome: tightened slave laws.
Slavery in the War of 1812
More than 500 enslaved people took up arms; US federal troops and slave owners’ militia responded quickly and brutally and put down the rebellion
Denmark Vesey Conspiracy
Vesey and his followers planned to kill slaveholders in Charleston, liberate the slaves, and sail to the black republic of Haiti for refuge

Radical piece of literature - slaves should be proud and revolt + deserve rights

Invented by Eli Whitney; revolutionized the production of cotton by greatly speeding up the process of removing seeds from cotton fibers; caused slavery to reapidly grow
Preisdent John Tyler
- Succeed after William Henry Harrison’s death
- Only a Whig in name (allienated himself from the party)
- Expanded lands into Texas
- Wanted to encourage state rights and advocated to protect slaveholders rights and the institution of slavery
- Wanted to prevent any further tariffs from being introduced
Tyler’s Annexation Ambition
His last chance to run was as an independent candidate so he hired a political organizer to praise him in newspapers and ads; only way he could successfully do so was annex Texas and win the majority of southern states to win the election
The USS Princeton Disaster
Tour demonstrating power of cannon, it gets too hot and explodes, killing 3 cabinet members and a dozen people; people are done with Tyler
