Skull (Cranium) Flashcards
Axial consists of
skull, vertebral column, bony thorax
Appendicular consists of:
arms, legs, etc.
*APPENDAGES (add-ons!)
Skull consists of two types of bones:
cranium & facial bones
Cranium functions as:
1)
encloses & protects the brain
Facial bones functions as..
2)
holds eyes, allows for frowns, smiles, etc.
Forehead bone
*cranium
frontal bone
Superior and lateral cranium
*cranium
parietal bone
Inferior to parietal bones
*cranium
temporal
Cranium consists of 3 bones
parietal, frontal, temporal
Temporal has 5 bones:
external auditory meatus, styloid process, zygomatic process, mastoid process, and jugular foramen
Jugular Foramen:
*temporal
jugular vein drains brain
Zygomatic process
*temporal
thin bridge of bone, goes off of cheekbones (zygomatic bone)
Mastoid process
*temporal
posterior/inferior to external auditory
elephant ear
Styloid process
*temporal
sharp projection, muscle attachment
External auditory meatus
*temporal
leads to ear drum and middle ear
Occipital bone
floor/back of wall of skull
Occipital bone consists of 2 things:
foramen magnum & occipital condyles
Foramen Magnum
*occipital
“large hole,” where the spinal cord passes
Occipital condyles
*occipital
rockerlike resting site for first vertebra
Skeletal System has two parts:
axial & appendicular
Sphenoid Bone
butterfly shaped bone that forms part of floor cranial cavity
Sella Turcica
*sphenoid
“turk’s saddle,” holds pituitary gland
Ethmoid bone
forms roof of nasal cavity and part of medial wall of orbits
Ethmoid bone consists of 2 things:
Crista Galli & Cribiform
Crista Galli
*ethmoid
brain attachment point, towards frontal
Cribiform plate
*ethmoid
holey area allowing small receptors to reach brain, towards frontal
