Eye Quiz Flashcards
Lacrimal fluid also known as?
tears
Why do you have a blind spot?
no photoreceptors there, optic nerve is present
Which part of the eye do albinos have trouble with due to light scattering?
iris
White part of the eye?
sclera
Pink eye is an infection of which layer?
conjunctiva
Optic Pathway
optic nerve, optic chiasma, optic tracts, thalamus/optic radiation, occipital lobe
3 Tunics of the eye
first
1.) Fibrous tunic (outer)
very fibrous & tough
2 major parts:
- sclera(white connective tissue)
- cornea(transparent central anterior portion) allows light to pass through, repairs itself easily, immune to rejection bc immune system is out (avascular)
3 Tunics of the eye
second
2.) Choroid layer (middle)
blood rich
dark in color (pigment), prevents light scattering
3 modified structures:
- ciliary body(smooth muscle) controls iris and lens
- iris(colored part of eye) albinos lack pigment => troubled vision in bright light
- pupil(rounded opening in the iris)
3 Tunics of the eye
last/third
3.) Sensory Tunic (retina)
2 photoreceptors: rods & cones (breaking down light)
- rods(most are found on the edges of the retina) allows for peripheral vision, dim light vision, perception is in all gray tones
- cones(allow for colored/detailed vision) densest at the center of retina, fovea centralis=only cones
Trail of Tears
lacrimal gland, excretory duct of lacrimal gland, lacrimal canals, lacrimal sac, nasolacrimal duct, nasal cavity
