Skull Flashcards
Foramen Spinosum
Middle Meningeal Artery
Nervous spinosus
Foramen Ovale
Accessory Meningeal Artery
V3
Incisive Foramen
Found in hard palate:
Sphenopalatine Artery
Nasopalatine Nerve (V2)
Greater/Lesser Palatine Foramen
Greater/Lesser Palatine Artery
Greater/Lesser Palatine Nerve
Sensory Innervation of Auditory Tube
IX- Visceral Sensory
Carotid Canal
Large foramen found medial to styloid process
-Carotid canal passes thru where it becomes the Foramen Lacerum inside the skull
Stylomastoid Foramen
Small foramen found in b/w styloid and mastoid processes
-VII
Hypoglossal Canal
Canal found underneath the occipital condyles
Pterygopalatine Fossa
Found in b/w the lateral pterygoid plate and maxillary bone
-V2 ends here
Posterior Superior Alveolar Foramina
Very small foramen found in the infratemporal fossa
-Posterior Superior Alveolar NAV
Anterior Superior Alveolar Nerve
Branches off the infraorbital nerve (V2)
Petrotympanic Fissure
Found underneath the temporal fossa and allows passage of
- Chorda tympani
- Tympanic artery
Greater Petrosal Nerve
Contains: Visceral Motor, Parasympathetics, Visceral Sensory
Innervates lacrimal and mucous glands; sensory to nasopharynx
Damage?- Decreased tear prod. & decreased sensory
Stapedial Nerve
Contains: Branchiomotor
Innervates: Stapedius
Damage?- Hyperacousia
Chorda tympani
Contains: Parasympathetics, Taste Fibers
Innervates: Submandibular, Subsalivary Glands; Taste to anterior 2/3 of tongue
Damage?- Decrease salivation & taste
Posterior Auricular Nerve
Contains: Branchiomotor, Somatic Sensory
Innervates: Posterior digastric, stylohyoid, Occipitalis,
Damage?- Ear pain accomp. Bell’s Palsy
Pterygopalatine Ganglion
Innervates lacrimal and mucous glands
Hitchiking Taste Fibers
Chorda tympani jumps onto V3 and leaves onto anterior 2/3 of tongue
Innervation of Parotid Gland
CN IX comes off Otic ganglion and enters
Greater Petrosal Nerve hitchiking pathway
After leaving pterygopalatine ganglion, hitchikes w/ V1 and V2 fibers to lacrimal and mucous glands
Acoustic neuroma
Tumor @ internal auditory meatus damaging VII & VIII
- Loss of vestibular/auditory fnxn (VIII)
- Facial paralysis
- Loss of taste
- Decreased salivation
*If VII damaged in brainstem, would not have the latter 2
