Nasal Cavity Flashcards
Boundaries of Nasal Cavity
Roof: Nasal, Frontal, Ethmoid, Sphenoid
Floor: Maxillary, Palatine
Medial: Cartilage, Ethmoid, Vomer
Lateral: Nasal, Maxillary, Inferior Concha, Palatine, Ethmoid, Sphenoid
Nasal fracture
Breaks the cribiform plate
=>CSF leakage from nose
Ethmoidal Bulla
Rounded elevation below middle concha formed by Middle Ethmoidal air cells
Hiatus Semilunaris
C-shaped slit below ethmoidal bulla
Infundibulum
Anterior part of the hiatus semilunaris
Sphenoethmoidal Recess
Contains the olfactory foramina
Somatic Sensory nerves of the nasal cavity
- Anterior Ethmoidal (V1)
- Nasal branches (V2)
- Nasopalatine (V2)
Arteries of Nasal Cavity
- Anterior/Posterior Ethmoidal
- Sphenopalatine
- Facial (branches)
Epistaxis
“Nosebleed”
- Is extensive due to anastomoses in nose
- If spurting = arterial
Paranasal Air Sinuses
- Lightens bones but allows for spread of infxn
1. Frontal
2. Ethmoid (infxn=>orbit)
3. Sphenoid
4. Maxillary (contains roots of teeth)
Primary Palate
Anterior to incisive foramen; formed by the fusion of the medial processes
Posterior Palate
Posterior to incisive foramen; formed by fusion of maxillary process
Anterior Cleft Palate
“Cleft lip”
-Failure of fusion of medial nasal processes
Tonsillar Bed
Formed by superior pharyngeal constrictor muscle and stylopharyngeus
- Receives blood from tonsillar branches of facial artery; drains to pharyngeal plexus of veins
- IX can be damaged here
Deglutition
- Bolus formed by tongue
- Styloglossus and mylohyoid push bolus back
- Tensor palati, levator palati, and stylopharyngeus elevate the soft palate to block the nasal cavity
- Pharyngeal constrictors contract and pull food down
