Spread of infxn =>Hearing loss; possible spread thru Tegmen tympani
Treatment- tympanostomy
Middle Ear boundaries
Roof- Tegmen tympani (thin part of temporal bone)
Floor- Jugular vein found below
Anterior-Canal for Tensor tympani
Auditory tube
Posterior- Mastoid air cells, CN VII
Medial Wall- Oval window; Round window
Tensor tympani
tenses the tympanic membrane to dampen sound
O-Canal in ant. wall
I-handle of malleus
N- V3
Stapedius
O- Posterior wall
I-neck of stapes
N- VII
Sensory innervation of inner ear
Visceral sensory coming from the tympanic plexus of IX
-formed by the tympanic nerve
VII in the middle ear
Travels thru internal auditory meatus to provide branchiomotor to stapedius
- Also gives off the greater petrosal nerve and chorda tympani
Chorda tympani
Crosses over the handle of the malleus in the tympanic cavity
- Taste to anterior 2/3 of tongue parasympathetic to sublingual salivary and submandibular glands
- Loss of taste if tympanic membrane pierced
