Chemosensory Fnxn: Smell and Taste Flashcards
Population Coding
Patterned response of the entire population of receptors; makes response to specific odorants reproducible
Adaptation of Olfactory Neurons
Ca2+ enters and is bound by CaM; makes it less effective at opening Cl- channels
Olfactory bulb processing
Organizes chemosensory input into broad categories; higher processing in entorhinal cortex
Salt/Sour taste transduction
Both ionotropic
Salt: Na+ flows thru ENaC channels depolarizing cell & activating Ca2+ channels
Sour: H+ flows thru TRP channels depolarizing cell & activating Ca2+ channels
Sweet/Bitter/Umami Taste Transduction
Tastant binds to G-protein coupled receptor which then activates PLC
=>Increased IP3 opening Ca2+ membrane channels and ER Ca2+ channels
Glomeruli
Spherical structures where olfactory neurons synapse at
*each glomeruli receives axons from only ONE receptor neuron
