Skin Structure And Function Flashcards
The sebaceous glands of sheep produce ___
Lanolin
I’m other species the product produced is called___which functions to keep the hair soft, pliant and somewhat waterproof
Sebum
The secretions of sebaceous glands can clog the hair follicle opening and over time turn black and become a
Comedone
Where is the location of the three primary cutaneous pouches found in sheep?
Cutaneous pouches in sheep are unfolding of skin that contain fine hairs, sebaceous and oil glands. They cbs be found infraorbital, interdigital and inguinally.
Describe the structure and function of vibrissae
(Whiskers) Prominent sinus hairs, found on nearly all mammals that act as specialized sensory organs for touch
Sebaceous glands
Found all over the body except paw pads and nasal planum. Located in the dermis. Empty into hair follicles or the skin surface at mucocutaneous junctions of the lips, labia vulgar, penis, prepuce, anus eyelid and ear canal. Sheep they empty directly on skin surface of cutaneous pouches. Contain sebum (lanolin in sheep). Keeps hair moist some antibacterial/anti fungal properties. Clogged hair follicles produce whiteheads and comedones (blackheads)
Sudoriferous Glands
Found over entire body of most domestic species including pigs, horses, cattle, dogs and sheep. Only horses produce profuse sweat, a thin, transparent, watery liquid that helps cool the body through evaporation
Eccrine glands
Coiled tube in the dermis or hypodermis that connects to the skin surface by a long duct. In dogs they are only in the deep fat layers and footpads
Apocrine glands
Coiled excretory portion in the dermis or hypodermis with a single excretory duct. Empty into hair follicle not skin surface, in dogs in the external ear canal
Tail
Found in most dogs and cats at dorsal base of tail. Thought to assist in identification. Large sebaceous and apocrine glands. May look greasy especially during estrus and puberty
Anal sac
Musk glands found in skunks, dogs and cats. Located and 5 and 7 o’ clock relative to anus with single duct that empties at 3 and 9 o’ clock. Attract mate and identification purposes. Empty at defecation or fear.
