Body Systems Flashcards
What are the 6 body systems?
Circulatory system
Nervous system
Skeletal system
Muscular system
Excretory system
Reproductive system
Consists of Nails, hooves, claws, horns, skin, oil and sweat glands, hair, fur, wool, and/or feathers
Functions include: Protection, Thermoregulation, Camouflage, Storage, Synthesis, Sensation, defense and stability
Integumentary System
Bones, Ligaments, Cartilage, Joints
Supports and protects the body
Bones provide a surface for muscle attachment
Aid in body movement
Provide housing for the cells that produce blood cell and a storage space for minerals and lipids
Skeletal System
Skeletal muscle and tendons
Produces body movements
Stabilizes body position and generates heat
Muscular system
Brain, special senses, Nerves, spinal cord
Regulates body activities
Detects changes throughout the body both internally and externally and responds to those changes through muscular contraction and glandular excretions
Nervous system
Pineal, Hypothalamus, Pancreas, Adrenal glands, Thyroid, and Parathyroid glands, Thymus, Pituitary, Ovaries, and testes
Releases hormones that act as chemical messengers in the blood
These “Messengers” regulate body activity by relaying between endocrine glands and target organs
Endocrine system
Tongue, Pancreas, Stomach, Esophagus, Liver, Oropharynx, Gall Bladder, Anus, Salivary glands, intestines, Mouth, and Teeth
This system is a closed system that works by breaking down food, through nutrient absorption, all the way to elimination
Digestive System (AKA, Gastrointestinal system)
Spleen, Thymus, Red bone marrow, Lymph, Lymph vessels, Lymph nodes and tonsils
This system has several important functions including, maturation and proliferation of lymphocytes, carrying lipids from the GI tract to the blood and returning proteins and fluid to the blood
Lymphatic System
Blood, Heart, and Blood vessels
The heart contracts to pump blood through the blood vessels
Blood acts as a carrier for oxygen, nutrients, carbon dioxide, and waste
Blood also helps in acid-base regulation, temperature and water content
Components within blood help to defend against disease and repair damaged blood vessels
Cardiovascular System
Lungs, Pharynx, Trachea, Bronchial tree, Nose and Larnyx
This system works to transfer inhaled oxygen to the blood and carbon dioxide from the blood to exhaled air. In addition, this system helps with regulation of the acid-base balance in body fluid s well as noise production
Respiratory system
