Cardiovascular System Flashcards
The major artery of the systemic circulation, it receives blood from the left ventricle
Aorta
After leaving the heart in a cranial direction, the point at which the aorta turns caudally to go to the abdominal cavity
Aortic arch
The valve between the left ventricle and the aorta
Aortic valve
A blood vessel that carries blood away from the heart
Artery
The heart chamber that receives blood from the large veins. The right one receives blood from the vena cava and the left one receives blood from the pulmonary vein
Atrium
The externally visible part of the atrium
Auricle
The smallest blood vessels are composed of rolled up tubes of simple squamous epithelium (endothelium) that form extensive networks all over the body. Nutrients, gases, wastes, and so on are exchanged between the blood and the cells at this level
Capillary
The large vein that returns blood to the heart from the caudal part of the body
Caudal vena cava
Fine, threadlike cords that connect the free edge of the atrioventricular valves to the papillary muscles in the ventricles
Chordae Tendinaee
The blood vessels that carry blood to and from the cells and tissues of the heart
Coronary circulation
The large vein that returns blood to the heart from the head and forelimbs
Cranial vena cava
The relaxation, filling phase of a heart chamber
Diastole
The innermost layer of tissue that lines the heart chambers
Endocardium
The muscular pump that pumps blood to the cells and tissues of the body
Heart
The “wall” of the myocardium that separates the left and right atria of the heart
Interparietal septum
The fat filled groove on the outside of the heart that corresponds with the location of the interventricular septum
Interventricular groove
The “wall” of the myocardium that seperate the left and right ventricles of the heart
Intraventricular septum
The space in the thorax between the lungs that contains the trachea, esophagus, heart, nerves, lymphatic vessels, and major blood vessels
Mediastinum
The valve between the left atrium and the left ventricle
Mitral valve
The band of connective tissue in the right ventricle that provides extra support for the ventricle and prevents in from expanding too far
Moderator band
The thick muscular layer of the heart wall
Myocardium
The outermost layer of the pericardium that surrounds the heart
Pericardial sac
The protective outer covering of the heart
Pericardium
The blood circulation to the lungs
Pulmonary circulation
The valve between the right ventricle and the pulmonary artery, also known as the pulmonic valve
Pulmonary valve
Blood vessels that carry blood to and from the lungs
Pulmonary vessels
Blood vessels that carry blood to and from the kidneys
Renal artery and vein
The natural pacemaker of the heart
Sinoatrial (SA) Node
Another name for the pulmonary and aortic valves
Semilunar valves
The blood circulation to and from all parts of the body except the lungs
Systemic circulation
The contracting, pumping phase of a heart chamber
Systole
The valve between the right atrium and the right ventricle
Tricuspid valve
A blood vessel that Carrie’s blood toward the heart
Vein
The heart chamber that pumps blood out through the large arteries. The left one pumps blood out through the aorta and the right one pumps blood out through the pulmonary artery
Ventricle
