Skin and genitals Flashcards
Another word for ‘‘cooling’’
Dilation
Another word for ‘‘warming’’
constriction
What is the six function of the skin?
- Protection
- Body temperature regulation
- Cutaneous sensation
- Metabolic functions – synthesis of vitamin D in
dermal blood vessels - Blood reservoir
- Excretion – limited amounts of nitrogenous wastes
are eliminated from the body in sweat
Which are the tree main part of the skin?
- Epidermis
- Dermis
- Hypodermis (subcutaneous fat)
Which tissue consist the epidermis of?
Composed of keratinized stratified squamous
epithelium
Which are the four cell types of the epidermis?
keratinocytes, melanocytes,
Merkel cells, and Langerhans’ cells
What function have the Keratinocytes?
Produce the fibrous protein keratin
What function have the Melanocytes?
Produce the brown pigment
melanin
What function have the Langerhans’ cells?
Langerhans’ cells – epidermal macrophages that
help activate the immune system
What function have the Merkel cells?
Function as touch receptors in
association with sensory nerve endings
Which tree pigments contributes to our pigment and what ‘‘color’’ does they give?
- Melanin – yellow to reddish-brown to black
pigment, responsible for dark skin colors - Carotene – yellow to orange pigment, most
obvious in the palms and soles of the feet - Hemoglobin – reddish pigment responsible for the
pinkish hue of the skin
Which two layers does the dermis consist of?
papillary and reticular
Which kind of tissue consist dermis of?
strong, flexible connective tissue
Which cell types do we find in the dermis?
fibroblasts,
macrophages
white blood cells
Which elements can be found in the dermis?
Blood vessels, Nerves, sweat gland, elastinfibers, collagen fibers
What secrets the Mammary glands ?
secrete milk
What secrets the Ceruminous glands ?
secrete cerumen, (vax)
Where can we find the Eccrine sweat glands
found in palms(handflatorna), soles of the
feet, and forehead
What secrets the Sebaceous Glands?
Secrete an oily secretion called sebum
Which tissue are the hypodermis made of?
Composed of adipose and areolar connective tissue
