Skin Flashcards
Name the 3 layers of the epithelial cells
Epithelium ( outside )
mesothelium ( middle )
endothelium ( inside )
Name 3 layers of body tissues
Epithelium
Basement membrane
Connective tissue
Describe structure of epithelium
Dense tight packed cells arranged in sheets or glands
Avascular
Little extracellular matrix
Constantly regenerate
Name 2 types of epithelia and where found
Membraneous -in sheets -line blood vessels
Glandular - follicles in exocrine /endocrine glands
Name the function of the epithelium
Protect -skin
absorb - nutrients from gut
secrete - hormones from glans
Sense - ear and skin
Name 3 types of connective tissue
Fibrous connective tissue
Bone
Blood
Name 4 functions of connective tissue
Support body structures eg organs/bone
Transport substances thru body - ie between tissues and organs ( blood)
Defends against foreign invaders -
2 differences between epithelia and connective tissue
Epithelia - densely packed cells - little extracellular matrix
Connective tissue - loosely packed cells lots extracellular matrix
Name 4 types of fibrous connective tissue
Loose fibrous ( most common )-
Dense fibrous - regular or irregular
Adipose tissue
Explain where loose fibrous connective tissue is found and structure
most common - around many body structures
contains a thick soft gel hyaluronic acid made by fibroblasts
Lots cells ( especially fibroblasts)
eg peridontal tissue
where is adipose tissue and its job
below skin for protection and insulation
name 2 types of dense connective tissue and where found
Dense irregular -collagenous fibers make dense mat ie kidney capsule
Dense regular -collagen/elastin fibers in bundles ie tendon
What is the extracellular matrix - made of area between epithelia and
Made up of proteins and mineralised crystal to support structure cells
Name main protein in the extracellular matrix
Collagen- very strong and flexible
Name 2 components found in the extracellular matrix
Collagen ( main ) and elastin
