Facial nerve Flashcards
What is Cranial nerve VII
Facial nerve
How can the facial nerve be injured in dental practise
Inserting the needle into the parotid and injecting to far when performing and inferior alveolar nerve block in the pterygomandibular fossa
What does the cervical branch of the facial nerve supply
Platysma
What does the marginal mandibular branch of the facial nerve supply
Depressor labii inferioris
Depressor anguli labii
Mentalis
What does the buccal branch of the facial nerve supply
Buccinator
Zygomaticus
What does the zygomatic branch of the facial nerve supply
Orbicularis Otis
What does the temporal branch of facial nerve supply
Occipitofrontalis
Orbicularis oculi
Corrigator supercili
What is the chord tympani
A branch off the facial nerve that travels with V3 (branch lingual nerve )and provides taste to anterior 2/3 tongue and parasympathetic to submandibular and sublingual glands
Once outside the skull what branches does the facial nerve give off
Posterior auricular nerve
Digastric ( posterior belly)
Stylohyoid nerve
5 branches in the parotid gland :
- temporals
-Zygomatic
-buccal
-marginal mandibular
-Cervical
What does the facial nerve supply
Muscles of expression
Parasympathetic to submandibular gland and sublingual gland
Taste to anterior 2/3 tongue ( via chord tympana)
Name the pathway of the facial nerve
MUST KNOW
Arises in the pons/medulla junction
Travels thru the internal acoustic meatus
Into the facial canal in the temporal bone
Here gives off the sensory chord tympani and a small branch to stapedius
Facial nerve continues down and exits thru the stylomastoid foramen in the temporal bones where it continues down toward the parotid gland ( pre partid 3 branches -posterior auriculotemporal
-posterior digastric
-stylohyoid branch
In parotid (-divides the gland in to 2 lobes ( it does NOT supply the parotid )-it divides into 5 branches
Temporal
Zygomatic
Buccal
Mandibular
Cervical
What type of nerve is facial nerve
Mixed - mostly motor
Name the 5 branches of the facial nerve that arise within the parotid gland and a muscle they supply
Temporal - superior part orbicularis oculi
Zygomatic - inferior part of orbicularis oculi’
Buccal - rigorous/orbicularis oris/bucinator
Mandibular - mentalis muscle
Cervical- platysma
What is chorda tympani course
Arises off the nerve in the temporal bone as goes thru facial canal
Travels in petrotympanic fissure. ( behind the TMJ )
Exits infra temporal fossa ( joins lingual nerve of V3)
What does the chord tympani supply
Pre and post ganglionic fibers supply - submandibular and sublingual glands
Taste to anterior 2/3 body of tongue
