Nerves -trigeminal Flashcards
What 3 types of nerves are there?
Motor —-> muscle
Sensory—–> touch and taste
Parasympathetic—–> special sensation ie taste /secretions of glands
Trigeminal nerve is what cranial nerve
CNV
How many branches does the trigeminal nerve have
three
Name the three divisions of the trigeminal nerve
V1- ophthalmic
V2- maxillary
V3 - mandibular
name the three divisions of the trigeminal nerve and there exit points from skull
Ophthalmic V1- superior orbital fissure
Maxillary ( V2) - foramen rotundum
Mandibilar V3- foramen ovale
Name the area of supply of V1
Sensory to Superior 1/3 face - top of the nose to inner eye to top of frontal area
Supplies lacrimal gland
Name the area of supple of V2
Sensory Mid face - side nose - cheek and lower eyelid
Which division(s) of the trigiminal nerve is (are ) sensory only
V1/V2
Which division(s) of the trigiminal nerve had a motor supply
V3 only
Name the are of supply of the mandibular division of V3 and its nerve branches
V3 -Sensation to lower 1/3 face- lower lip/mandibular teeth /mandible( not angle ) meninges and temporal area-
Motor to muscles mastication
Lingual Nerve branch-Sensory to anterior 2/3 tongue and anterior hard palate
Inferior alveolar nerve branch -motor to myelohyoid and ant belly digastric
Name the branches off V3
Buccal
Muscular -> Deep temporal /Masseteric/LAteral pterygoid N
Auriculotemporal
Lingual
Inferior alveolar
Mylohyoid
Mental nerve
incisive
Name nerve supply tongue
Anterior 2/3- V3 ( lingual Nerve branch) general
-VII ( chord tympani ) - taste
Posterior 1/3 - glossopharyngeal nerve (taste and general sensation)
Name a cranial nerve problem of trigeminal nerve and its presentation
Trigeminal neuralgia ( Tic doulourex)
Sharp electric shock nerve pain down trigeminal Nerve distribution on 1side of face
Usually from compression/by a vessel inflammation or degeneration of the nerve
Usually right side and V2/V3> V1
How is trigeminal neuralgia treated
Anticonvulsant meds ( carbamazepine)
Botox injections
Surgery - laser or nerve removal
What cause of trigeminal neuralgia
Unknown
What does Buccal nerve of V3 supply
SENSORY ONLY
buccal mucosa/gingivia
skin cheek
What are the muscular nerves off V3 and their supply
MOTOR ONLY
Deep tempural N- temporalis’
Masseteric N -masseter
Lateral pterygoid nerve - lateral pterygoid
Where does the muscular branch V3 exit skull
Mandibular notch
What does Auriculotemporal nerve of V3 supply
SENSORY ONLY
TMJ/External ear/scalp skin
Parotid gland - parasympathetic
What does Lingual nerve of V3 supply
SENSORY ONLY
Anterior 2/3 body tongue ( general sensation)
Mouth floor and gingiva
What does Inferior alveolar nerve of V3 supply
Mandibular molars sensation
What 2 nerves form from the inferior alveolar Nerve and where
Mental and Incisive nerves in mental foramen
Where is inferior alveolar nerve formed
Mandibular foramen
What does mylohyoid nerve of V3 supply
MOTOR NERVE (MAD)
Myeloid
anterior digastric
What does mental nerve of V3 supply
SENSORY ONLY
Chin
Lower lip
Anterior teeth mucosa
where does the mental nerve V3 form
Mental foramen
What does incisive nerve of V3 supply
SENSORY ONLY
mandibular anterior teeth and premolars
what do the mental nerve and incisive nerve join to form and where
Inferior alveolar nerve in the mandibular foramen
What is treatment Bells palsy
Treatment - self limits - can get anti -inflammatory steroids ( usually help) or antiviral ( usually not help ) or physical therapy
What type of nerve is the trigeminal nerve
Mixed nerve mostly sensory
Name the pathway of the sensory branch of facial nerve ( chord tympani )
Arises off the nerve in the femoral bone as goes thru facial canal
Travels in petrotympanic fissure. ( behind the TMJ )
Exits infra temporal fossa ( joins lingual nerve of V3 )
Pre and post ganglionic fibers supply - submandibular and sublingual glands
Taste to anterior 2/3 body of tongue
