Skin Flashcards
What is the epidermis
The upper layer of the skin and it would be derived from the embryonic ectoderm
What is the dermis
The layer of skin below the epidermis and would be derived from the mesoderm
What is the hypodermis
The layer of skin that would be below the epidermis and the dermis and would be derived from the mesoderm
What are the functions of the skin
Protection: UV light, chemical , injury
Barrier: waterproof and watertight
Sensation: touch and pressure (contain the pressure and the touch receptors)
Thermoregulation: insulation, subcutaneous layer
Metabolic: synthesis of vitamin D3
What are the skin receptors
Pacinian corpuscle: pressure and vibration
Messiness cells: touch
Ruffini endings: stretch receptors
What are the function of ground substances
BIND TO WATER
Lubricant between the collagen and the elastic fibres
Provides bulk
Allows the dermis to act as a shock absorber
Allows nutrients and waste to pass through the dermis
What is the function of the keratinised cells
Would protect the layers of underlying skin
What is the migration period between the Stantum Basle and the strantum corenum (horny layer)
30 days
What are the three layers within the hypodermis (subcantaneous adipose tissue)
Superficial fascia
Reticula cutis
Deep fascia
(All would be underneath the epidermis and the dermis in this order)
What nervous system are the sweat glands controlled by
Sympathetic system
What components are part of the hair follicle
Erector pills muscle
Sebaceous gland (secretes lipid substance, sebum, into the hair follicle)
What is the eccrine sweat gland
Sweat released to the surface
What is the apocrine sweat gland (exocrine gland)
Scent production
What is the basement membrane
Thin sheets of functional cells made of type IV (4) collagen
Adhesion
Barrier
Organisation of cells
What are the 4 skin appendages
Sweat glands
Hair follicles
Sebaceous glands
Hair and nails
Arrector pilli muscles
