Epithelia Flashcards
What are the different types of epithelial cells/layers
Squamous
Columnar
Cuboidal
What is the pseudostratified cells
Contains the irregular nuclei and then the nuclei would be irregularly spaced
What do the colomnar cells contain that the others do not
Ciliated layers
What is the function of the basement membrane
Containing the parenchyma (functional cells)
Partition
Barrier
Control cell growth and differentiation
Adhesion
What are the junctional complexes
Tight junctions: no leakage
Gap junctions: allows substances to pass into the cells
What is the difference between desmosomes and hemidesmosomes
Desmosomes would connect cell to cell
Hemidesmosomes would connect the cell to the basement membrane
What are the types exocrine glands
Melocrine: the cells that would excrete by exocytosis
Apocrine: the cell would bleb
Holocrine: the disintegrate the whole cell and would then release the contents
Where is the stratified squamous epithelium
Areas of wear and tear
Vagina and skin
Where is the cuboidal epithelium and what does it do
Secretory function
Sweat glands
Where is the columnar epithelium and what does it do
Protection
Larynx and the male urethra
