17
Q

What is an externally paced skill?

A

When the performer has no control over the start and the speed of the ball

18
Q

What is a discrete skill?

A

A skill that has a clear beginning and end

19
Q

What is a serial skill?

A

A skill that contains several discrete skills in order to make a more integrated movement

20
Q

What is a continuous skill?

A

Has no clear beginning and end.

21
Q

What is a low-organised skill?

A

A skill that is easily broken into parts

22
Q

What is a high-organised part?

A

A skill that is not easily broken into parts

23
Q

What is a simple skill?

A

A skill that requires few decisions when being performed

24
Q

What is a complex skill?

A

A skill that requires decisions making using lots of information when performed.

25
Q

What is an example of an open skill?

A

Playing football
Environment is unpredictable and changes frequently (pitch, opposition, team mates, ball). This means the performer must make decisions as the skill is in progress.

26
Q

What is an example of a closed skill?

A

Performing a shot putt.
Its a repeated uniform action in which the regulations and conditions of the throwing action are unlikely to change. Fewer decisions to make and don’t have to adapt.

27
Q

What is an example of a gross skill?

A

Rugby tackle

Shoulder muscles to initiate a rugby tackle, together with the leg muscles to drive the opponent to the ground.

28
Q

What is an example of a fine skill?

A

Table tennis

Smaller, more intricate muscle groups such as the control needed to return a shot.

29
Q

What can smaller muscles be used for?

A

Fine motor control such as the muscles used to control movements of the eyes and of the fingers.

30
Q

What is an example of a self-paced skill?

A

Taking a penalty
The player will decide before how hard to strike the ball and when to commence the run up (albeit after the referee has indicated that the penalty can commence).

31
Q

What is an example of an externally paced skill?

A

In a regatta

The sailor must react to the speed of the wind and the flow of the current.

32
Q

What is an example of a discrete skill?

A

Tennis serve
A fats action, after which the player either stops and repeats if the serve doesn’t go in, or on completion of a successful serve, will then move into position to deal with a possible return.

33
Q

What is an example of a continuous skill?

A

Cycling
When the actions of pedalling can be repeated continuously until the task is completed, or in a non-competitive situation can be stopped when the cyclist feels that they need a rest.

34
Q

What is a sub-routine?

A

An action that is part of the whole skill movement.

35
Q

What is an example of a serial skill?

A
Triple jump (hop, step, jump)
Distinct discrete skills can be practiced individually and then put together to form the completed movement
36
Q

What is an example of a low organised skill?

A

Swimming stroke

The arm action, leg action and body position can be easily identified and practised separately if needed.

37
Q

What is an example of a high organised skill?

A

Volley in football

The action is very quick and the sub-routines merge quickly as the skill is performed.

38
Q

What is an example of a simple skill?

A

A forward roll in gymnastics

Limited decisions and not much to think about

39
Q

What is an example of a complex skill?

A

Dribble in hockey
Player has to take into account the position of other players, attackers and defenders (cognitive parts), as well as concentrating on the ball and the control of the stick (psychomotor parts).

40
Q

Can skill classification change?

A

A skill classified as one thing change in different situations and, as the game or performance develops, skills can be classified in different ways.

41
Q

What’s an example of a skill classification changing?

A

In an isolated practice, a basketball dribble, when the players are lined up and practicing in turn without opposition, can be classed as closed as its predictable. However, in a practice situation of 3v2 or during a game, the skill can become open as its unpredictable.

At the start of a swimming race the start may be classed as discrete since it has a clearly defined beginning and end. However, as the actual race get underway, the swimming stroke can be classed as continuous since its unclear when one arm action, for example, ends and another arm action begins.
