Performer should focus on the key aspects of the skill; coach should highlight them.
Coach can change or modify the display.
What are the advantages of visual guidance?
Illustrates exactly what a skill should look like
Helps build a clear mental picture of how the skill should be performed.
Used effectively in conjunction with verbal guidance
Highlights weaknesses
For cognitive performers
Builds motor programmes
What are the disadvantages of visual guidance?
Demonstration must be accurate and clear, otherwise actions are learned wrong.
Performer must be able to match the demonstration given
Too much information given at once could induce overload.
What’s an example of visual guidance?
A coach introduces the overhead clear to performers by demonstrating the technique their self and also by showing them a video.
What’s verbal guidance?
An explanation

Very useful for open skills where performer needs to make decisions and adapt quickly.
Used effectively in conjunction with visual guidance
Can highlight a coaching point
Can be used for technical/tactical help
What are the disadvantages of verbal guidance?
May be chance of information overload if too many instructions are given together

What are the disadvantages of manual guidance?
May interfere with kinaesthesis is overused
May become too dependant
Proximity of coach may add pressure
Performer may lose motivation if they can’t do task without help
Bad habits might be instilled
