Skeletal System Written Flashcards
Axial skeleton (3 parts)
Skull
Bony thorax (ribs)
Vertebral column
What are the four steps to repair of bone fracture
1 hematoma (blood filled swelling) is formed & surrounds the fracture 2. Break is splinted by fibrocartilage to form a callus 3 fibrocartilage callus is replaced by a bony callus 4 bony callus is remodeled to form a permanent patch
Bone movement is determined by
Shape of bone & structure of joint
Cervical
7 neck
Thoracic
12 chest region (connect to ribs)
Lumbar
5 lower back
Two composite bones
Sacrum
Coccyx
Sacrum
(5) formed by a cushion of 5 vertebrae
Coccyx
(4) tailbone
Types of ribs
True ribs
False
Floating
True ribs
(Pairs 1-7) (7) attach to sternum
False ribs
(8-12) (5) don’t directly attach to sternum
Floating ribs
(11-12) (2 of the 5 false) no attachment to sternum
Simple fracture
Stays in skin
Compound fracture
Protrudes through skin
Avulsion
Ligament or tendon pulls bone away
Stress fracture
Happens overtime
Green stick fracture
Incomplete break longitudinal splits lengthwise
Transverse
Straight across
Comminuted
3 or more fragments
Compression
Bone is crushed
Depressed
Broken bone is pressed inward
Impacted
Broke. Bone ends are forced into eachother
