Skeletal System P.E Flashcards
What are the main functions of the skeletal system?
Movement, Support, Protection, Production of blood cells, Mineral storage, Structural shape
Why is movement a main function in the skeletal system?
The bones act like levers and also form joints that allows muscles to pull on them and produce joint movements
Why is support a main function in the skeletal system?
Keeps the body upright
Why is protection a main function in the skeletal system?
Keeps the body upright
Why is production of blood cells a main function in the skeletal system?
Certain bones in the skeleton contain red bone marrow and the bone marrow produces red blood cells, white blood cells and platelets.
Name three examples of bones that contain marrow
Pelvis
Sternum
Vertebrae
Clavicle
Why is mineral storage a main function in the skeletal system?
The bones themselves are made of minerals and act as a mineral store for calcium and phosphorus
Why is structural shape a main function in the skeletal system?
The skeleton provides the human shape and determines the height of a shape
What is a joint?
A joint is a place where two or more bones meet and is also called an articulation.
What give joints their balance?
A joint is held together by ligaments which give the joints their stability.
Where is cartilage found?
Cartilage is found at the ends of bones and where joints meet
What to tendons do?
Tendons attach muscles to the skeleton
What is synovial fluid?
Synovial joints have synovial fluid in the joint cavity that lubricates the joint so it moves smoothly
How is the synovial fluid made?
Synovial fluid is made by the synovial membrane
What cover the end of bones?
Cartilage
Articular cartilage
