Muscular System P.E Flashcards
What happens in an antagonistic muscle pair?
One muscle contracts and flexes, the other muscle relaxes and lengthens.
The muscle that is contracting, what is it called?
Agonist
The muscle that is relaxing, what is it called?
Antagonist
Name five antagonistic pairs
Triceps and Biceps Hamstrings and Quadriceps Gastrocnemius and Tibials anterior Hip flexor and Gluteals Pectoralis major and Latissimus dorsi
What is isotonic concentric contraction?
This involves the muscle shortening. The muscle move closer together and the muscle becomes fatter.
What is isotonic eccentric contraction?
This involves the muscle lengthening whilst it is under tension. The origin and insertion move further away from each other. An eccentric contraction provides the control of a movement on the downward phase and it works to resist the force of gravity.
What is isometric contraction?
This involves a muscle producing tension but staying the same length. This occurs when the body is fixed in one position.
