Skeletal System: Disorders Flashcards
Define osteoporosis
A condition associated with reduction of bone density due to exceeding bone reabsorption rate over deposition rate
What does osteoporosis lead to?
- fragility of bone tissue
- immobility of joints
- bone pain
- May cause fractures and skeletal deformities
Factors causing osteoporosis
- Hormonal imbalances (especially at menopause)
- Calcium deficiency
- Environmental factors
What is osteoarthritis?
A degenerative non-inflammatory disease which causes pain and restricted movements in affected joints
How does osteoarthritis occur?
Articular cartilage at joints gradually become thinner so articular surfaces of bones come in contact.
These bones begin to degenerate eventually, leading to pain
Risk factors of osteoarthritis
- obesity
- excessive use of affected joints
- female gender
- aging
- heredity
What are functions of intervertebral discs
Act as shock absorbers
Protects spinal cord
What are intervertebral discs consisted of
- outer cartilage ring
- Central core of soft gelatinous material
What is slipped disc
An injury or weakness causes the inner portion of the intervertebral disc to protrude through the outer ring.
What can slipped disc lead to
This leads to pain and discomfort
If a slipped disc compresses a spinal nerve, there can be pain and discomfort along the affected nerve.
What’s the cause of slipped disc
When lifting heavy weights without bending knees
