Human Skeletal System : Lower Limb Flashcards
What is the femur?
Largest, heaviest and strongest bone of body
How is hip joint formed
Head of femur forms hip joint with the acebabulum of hip bone of pelvis
Functions of hip joint
It is very sturdy and powerful, and bears all body weight when standing
Functions of lower limb
Extension
Flexion
Abduction
Adduction
Rotation
Circumduction at hip joint
How is the knee joint formed?
Lower end of femur articulates with tibia and patella to form knee joint
What are the possible movements of the knee joint?
Flexion
Extension
Rotatory movement that locks the joint when it’s fully extended
When this joint is locked, it’s possible to stand upright for a long time period
What gives the sole of a foot an arched or curved shape?
Arrangement of bones in foot supported by associated ligaments and muscles
What are the 2 arches in foot (metatarsal) bones
Longitudinal arch: curve running from heal to toe
Transverse arch: curve running across foot
What are the functions of foot arches?
Important in distributing body weight evenly, whether stationary or moving
