Joints of skeletal system Flashcards
What are the 3 main joint types
Ball and socket joint
Hinge joint
Pivot joint
Describe ball and socket joint
a ball shaped head is connected to a cup shaped socket and allows a wide movement range
for ex:
- flexion
- extension
- adduction
- abduction
- rotation
- circumduction
Functions of ball and socket joint
- flexion
- extension
- adduction
- abduction
- rotation
- circumduction
what is the hinge joint?
The articulating ends of the bone fit together (like a door hinge)
What are the functions of hinge joints?
- Flexion
- Extension
(restricted movements)
Examples of hinge joints
- elbow joint
- knee joint
- ankle joint
- joints between phalanges of fingers and toes
what are pivot joints?
one bone fits into a hoop shaped ligament that holds it close to another bone and allows it to rotate in the ring formed by the ligament.
These joints allow bones/limbs to rotate
Give an example for pivot joints
the head rotate by a pivot joint formed by the atlas vertebrae within the transverse ligament ring and odontoid process of axis
