Skeletal System Flashcards
What is the skeletal system made up of?
Bones, cartilage, ligaments
What are the main functions of the skeletal system?
- structure and movement
- protection of internal organs
- haemopoiesis
- mineral storage especially. Calcium phosphate
What are the three types of muscle tissue?
Skeletal, cardiac and smooth
What is muscle tissue?
Highly specialises tissue with four major functions
- contractility (shortens)
- excitability (responds to stimulus and produces action potentials)
- extensibility (stretches beyond resting length without damage)
- elasticity (returns to resting length after stretching)
How is skeletal muscle controlled and what is its function?
Controlled by the nervous system.
- produces body movements and maintains body position
- storage and movement
- generation of heat
What is a joint?
A place where two or more bones connect or articulate to allow motion between the parts
Are skeletal muscles the only effector organs of the somatic (voluntary) nervous system?
No
