Chemical Biology Flashcards
(10 cards)
What are the main components of living tissue?
Carbon, hydrogen, oxygen and nitrogen
What two basic particles make up the nucleus of an atom?
Neutron and proton
What positively charged particle is located at the centre of the atom in the nucleus?
Proton
What are electrolytes?
Dissociation of ionic compounds into separate ions which are then dissolved
What is covalent bonding?
Where 2 or more atoms share electrons so that each atom is able to fill its valence shell at least part of the time
What are hydrogen bonds?
Bond that forms between hydrogen atoms in one molecule and some atoms in other molecules. Typically, it is in water molecules
What is polarity?
Charge imbalance
What is diffusion?
The process of substances dissolving in fluids, from a high to low concentration
What is osmosis?
Movement from region of high concentration to low concentration across a semi permeable membrane
