Skeletal System Flashcards
Are bones a living organ?
Yes, each individual bone is a living organ.
What functions do bones have in the form of the skeleton?
- Support
- Protection
- Movement
- Blood formation
- Mineral storage
- Energy storage
What are osteoblasts?
Bone-building cells (form matrix and collagen fibres)
What are osteocytes?
Mature bone cells and the principal cells of bone tissue
What are osteoclasts?
Cells that breakdown (reabsorb) bone tissue
What is the central canal?
Centre of lamellae, conduct blood vessels
What is the lamellae?
Layer of matrix concentrically arranged around a central canal
What is the osteon?
A central canal and its lamellae
What is the lacunae?
Houses osteocytes.
What is the canaliculi?
Connects lacunae
What are the perforating canals?
Cross matrix and feed central canals with blood and nerves
What is the periosteum?
Outer; tough fibrous coat. Inner; blood vessels and osteogenic cells.
What is the endosteum?
Inner lining of bone containing reticular connective tissue and osteogenic cells.
Does spongy bone contain osteons?
No
What does spongy bone consist of?
Trabeculae surrounding many red marrow filled spaces.
