Nervous System 1 Flashcards
What makes up the central nervous system (CNS)?
The brain and the spinal cord.
Where is the brain located and how many neurons does it contain?
In the skull, contains 100 billion neurons.
Where is the spinal cord located and how many neurons does it contain?
In the spinal column, contains 100 million neurons.
What makes up the peripheral nervous system (PNS)?
The cranial nerves and the spinal nerves.
How many pair of cranial nerves are there and where do they attach?
12 pairs, attach to the base of the brain.
How many pairs of spinal nerves are there and where do they attach?
31 pairs, attach to the spinal cord.
What is the function of the central nervous system (CNS)?
- Analysis and interpretation of neural input (sensory).
- Coordination and execution of neural output (motor)
- Reflexes (involuntary)
- Conscious responses (voluntary)
- Logical thought
- Memory
- Emotions

Which nervous system is responsible for logical thought?
CNS
Which nervous system is responsible for memory?
CNS
Which nervous system is responsible for emotions?
CNS
Which nervous system is responsible for carrying sensory (afferent) nerve impulses to the CNS?
PNS
Which nervous system is responsible for carrying motor (efferent) nerve impulses away from the CNS?
PNS
Name the twelve cranial nerves.
- Olfactory
- Optic
- Oculomotor
- Trochlear
- Trigeminal
- Abducens
- Facial
- Vestibulocochlear
- Glossopharyngeal
- Vagus
- Accessory
- Hypoglossal
What is the function of the olfactory nerve?
Olfaction (smell)
What is the function of the optic nerve?
Vision
What is the function of the oculomotor nerve?
- Eye movement
- Pupillary constriction
- Accommodation
- Eyelid opening
What is the function of the trochlear nerve?
Eye movement (superior oblique muscle)
What is the function of the trigeminal nerve?
- Facial sensation
2. Mastication
What is the function of the abducens nerve?
Eye movement (lateral rectus muscle)
What is the function of the facial nerve?
- Facial movements
- Taste from anterior 2/3 of tongue (chorda tympani)
- Lacrimation
- Salivation
- Eyelid closing
- Auditory reflex
What is the function of the vestibulocochlear nerve?
- Hearing
2. Balance
What is the function of the glossopharyngeal nerve?
- Taste and sensation of posterior 1/3 of tongue
- Monitoring of carotid body and sinus chemoreceptors and baroreceptors
- Elevation of pharynx/larynx
What is the function of the vagus nerve?
- Taste from supraglottic region
- Swallowing
- Soft palate elevation
- Speech
- Cough reflex
- Parasympathetic innervation to thoracoabdominal viscera
- Monitoring aortic arch chemoreceptors and baroreceptors
What is the function of the accessory nerve?
- Head turning
2. Shoulder shrugging
What is the function of the hypoglossal nerve?
Tongue movements.
