What site selection would be needed for high volume, inexpensive wines?
Flat, fertile, dry, warm, eg Central Valley, Chile.
Flat and fertile- grapes ripen, mechanisation.
Dry- no disease
What cost factors need to be considered for site selection?
Location, layout, topography= cost implications.
eg. vy in frost pocket- produce less yields, slower investment on return/needs more expensive frost protection.
Same as sites with disease.
What other factors need to be considered for site selection?
-Price of land
-Steep slopes- no mechanisation= expensive, hard to find labour
Ease of access from vy site to winery- oxidation and microbial
Irrigation needed? Expensive
Proximity to town= labour, supplies, cellar door customers, distribution
Laws- PDOs etc
