Rootstocks Flashcards
Which 4 things can rootstocks help with?
Pests
Water
Soil PH
Vigour
How can rootstocks help with pests?
Phylloxera and rootknot nematodes.
Ramset and Dogridge.
How can rootstocks help with water?
- Hybrids of v.rupestris and v.berlanderi- 110R and 140R= high tolerance of drought= ability to root deeply and quickly.
- V.riparia- Riparia Gloire= tolerant of water logged soil= useful in high rainfall regions.
- V.berlandieri- tolerant of soils with high salinity- 1103P
How can rootstocks help with soil PH?
Acidic soils (low PH)- hybrids of v.rupestris and v.berlandieri= 99R/110R.
High limestone content (high PH)- 41B- V.berlandieri
How can rootstocks help with vigour?
Low vigour rootstocks= advance ripening- useful in cool climates. V.riparia- 420A/3309C.
High vigour rootstocks= v.rupestris- 140R- useful if want to boost vine growth and yields with infertile soil and dry conditions.
Also useful for style- eg sparking (high yields, delicate aromas).
