Planting Materials Flashcards
Duration of annual life cycle
Chard and PN- early ripening. Cool climates- need to reach ripeness before wet, cold weather.
Late ripening- Mouvedre- warm climates- early ripening in these climates would gain too much sugar and lose acidity too rapidly= unbalanced
Tolerance of drought
Grenache- S Rhone
Resistance to disease
Cab Sav- less resistant to grey rot, merlot susceptible- why make good blending partners.
Give an example of a grape that copes with Winter hardiness
Riesling- Ontario/Finger Lakes
Vigour
Savy B- in fertile climates- need to conrtol or will focus on shoots, not grapes managing or excessive shoot growth.
Style of wine
No tannin, young fruity wine- gamay or grenache instead of nebbiolo.
Yield
High yielding varieties- grenache- allow production of higher yields- concern with inexpensive wines
Cost
PN- more difficult to grow- prone to disease- more monitoring/spraying
Availability
Risk of spreading disease and pests- quarantine when introducing new planting material to country/region
Market demand
Savy B- in fashion.
GGs can cut original vine at trunk and graft a bud from new variety on top= head/top grafting.
Benefit= established root system, new grape varieties can produce fruit more quickly than brand new planting.
Disads- rootstock selected based on characteristics of existing.
