What is the purpose of SIFF?
Provides identification response to interrogations from ATC and MIL Interrogator systems.
Discriminates between friendly and hostile forces, provides bearing and range from them.
What does the primary radar provide?
Range and bearing info without the need of co-operation.
Sends high power, high freq transmissions to a target.
Relies on echoes back from object to display blip on radar.
What does secondary surveillance radar depend on?
a co-operating transponder to reply when interrogated.
How is the mode decoded?
Calculating the time between P1 and P3 pulses.
What are P2 pulses used for?
Side lobe suppression.
What do Mode S replies contain?
Airframe Address code Country code Platform Id Mode C altitude Mode 3/A code WOW Switch status.
Where is the transponder?
Facing aft, On a mounting tray in the rear bay on the lower shelf.
What modes can the transponder reply to?
1 2 3/A C 4 and mode S can facilitate mode 5 when it has been approved.
How is controlled?
AMS
CDNU
(MIL -STD-1553 databus.)
When is crypto unit fitted to transponder?
If mode 4/5 are in use, if not termination unit.
Where are the antennas?
Outer side of the vertical tail plane (top).
Transmits from the antenna that received the highest signal.
What frequencies does the SIFF use?
1030 Mhz for Interrogation
1090 Mhz for reply.
How is dat input to the crypto unit?
The KIK 13 fill gun accepts data from the KOI 18 fill gun.
What is the test set called?
IFF 701.
