Shoulder and Elbow Problems Flashcards
Shoulder dislocation
Anterior dislocation most common
Treatment - manipulation, immobilisation, physio, surgery
Subacromial impingement
Narrow of bony tunnel which tendon pass through
Pain and dysfunction due to pathology that decreases subacromial space or increases size of contents
Symptoms of subacromial impingment
Pain radiating to chest, traps or elbow Can't sleep on affected side Painful arc of abduction Hawkins test Power normal
Management of subacromial impingement
X-ray, US, MRI
Subacromial steroid injection
Phsyio
Arthroscopic subacromial decompression
Frozen shoulder
Acutely painful to stiff frozen shoulder Primary or secondary Clinical diagnosis Early, inject steroid Late, surgery
Rotator cuff tear
Traumatic
Degenerative
Acute - early surgery
Chronic - surgery if symptomatic
Shoulder arthritis
Osteoarthritis
Inflammatory arthritis
Post-traumatic arthritis
Rotator cuff integrity paramount
Calfcific/tendonitis of shoulder
Calcium phosphate deposits lead to ischaemia decreased movement, hot and swelling, severe pain
Deposits can be seen on x-ray
Treat with injection of corticosteroids, NDAIDs, analgesics, phsyio
Most common direction of dislocation of elbow?
Posterior
