Nerve Palsies Flashcards
What roots form the lateral of brachial plexus
C5-7
What roots form the posterior cord of brachial plexus?
C5-T1
What roots form medial cords
C8-T1
What nerves do the lateral cord form
MCN
Median (1/2)
What nerves do posterior cord form
Radial
What nerves do medial cord form
Ulnar
Median(1/2)
What is Erb’s palsy
Traction of C5,6
Waiter’s tip position - shoulder adducted and IR, elbow extended and pronated, wrist flexed
Obs complication or high velocity injury
What is Klumpke’s palsy
Traction of C8/T1
Very rare
Affects small muscles of hand-caw hand
What is Hilton’s Law?
Sensory nerve supplying a joint also supplies the muscles moving the joint and the skin overlying the insertions of these muscles
Axillary nerve palsy features
Shoulder dislocation (check sensation before and after relocation) Fracture of surgical neck of humerus Can cause deltoid atrophy
Radial nerve palsy features
Entrampment from humerus fracture
Compression
Symptoms depend on site of lesion
Meralgia Parasthetica
Altered sensation and pain lateral thigh
Compression of LFCN as it travels under lateral border of inguinal ligament
Carpal tunnel contents?
Carpal bones floor
Flexor retinaculum roof
Contains 9 tendons and a nerve (FDS,FDP,FPL and median)
Causes of carpal tunnel syndrome
Trauma, Fibroma, lipoma, hypothyroid, Rheumatoid, Gout, TD, Ganglion, Pregnancy
Features of carpal tunnel syndrome
Nocturnal pain and parasthesia
Wasting of thenar muscles
