Short Term Control of Blood Pressure Flashcards
1
Q
What is MAP?
A
Mean Arterial Pressure
Driving force pushing blood through the circulation.
2
Q
What is the function of the arterial baroreflex?
A
Short term control of blood pressure.
3
Q
Where are baroreceptors located?
A
Carotid sinus and aortic arch?
4
Q
What is the Valsalva manoeuvre?
A
Forced expiration against a closed glottis.
5
Q
What happens in the Valsalva manoeuvre?
A
- Increases thoracic pressure is transmitted to aorta, this reduces filling pressure, reduced MAP detected by baroreceptors whcausing a reflex increase in CO and TPR. AT end of manoeuvre, decrease in pressure is transmitted to aorta, VR restored.
6
Q
What is the clinical significance of the Valsalva manouevre?
A
It can be used to test autonomic function.
