CVS Physiology 1 Flashcards
What is the importance of most vascular beds being in parallel?
Allows all tissues to get oxygenated blood and allows the regional redirection of blood.
What is the relationship between pressure, flow and resistance in blood vessels?
Flow= pressure change/resistance
What is the function of arterioles?
Resistance vessels controlling the regional flow of blood.
What vessels act as capacitance vessels?
Veins and venules
What are the characteristics of the aorta?
Elastic artery
Wide lumen
Thick elastic wall
Damp pressure variations
What characterises (muscular) arteries?
Wide lumen
Strong, thick, non elastic wall
Low resistance conduit
What characterises arterioles?
Resistance vessels
Narrow lumen
Thick contractile wall
Controls flow
Allows regional redirection of blood
What characterises capillaries?
Exchange vessels
Narrow lumen
Thin wall
Characteristics of veins and venules?
Capacitance vessels
Wide lumen
Thin, distensible wall
Low resistance conduit and reservoir
Allows fractional distribution of blood between veins and rest of circulation
