Shoots Flashcards
What are shoots?
Every part of the plant that is aboveground
What are phytomeres?
A repeated unit that includes a leaf, the internode, and the node and axillary bud of the phytomere below it
What accounts for most of the increase in stem length?
Internode elongation. Not caused by cell division
What protects the shoot apical meristem?
Young leaves
What do leaf primordia become?
Leaves
What do bud primordia become?
Axillary buds
What is the function of shoots?
Hold up the photosynthetic parts of the plant to catch the light
What is the result of a plant investing a lot into growth to put its leaves above the competition?
More growth means the leaves are catching more light, but there is less stuff doing photosynthesis
