Sharing Space Flashcards
Space ahead - what should ur following distance be?
If 30mph or less 2-3 secs may be enough, if going faster at least 4 secs
Watch when rear of vehicle in front passes stationary object, count secs it takes u to reach it
Space ahead - when should u leave xtra room?
-Driver behind wants 2 pass
-Emergency vehicles
-Approaching railrd
-Stopped on hill/incline/uphill
-Slippery Rd
-Following motorcycles/bikes
-Following large vehicles
-Followed closely
How should u position urself in lane?
dont crowd centerline, generally safest 2 drive in center of ur lane
Ofc consider ur hazard difference splitting
How close can u follow a firetruck?
Illegal 2 follow closer than 500ft behind firetruck
What r some vehicles required to stop at railrd xings?
Transit buses, school buses, vehicles carrying hazardous materials
Space behind - if ur parallel parking & there’s traffic behind u what should u do?
Turn signal, pull next 2 parking space & let drivers pass b4 parking
What should u do if tailgated?
If there’s a right lane move right
Otherwise wait till Rd ahead is clear & gradually slow to encourage passing
If u have to drive so slowly ur making driver behind u slow down what should u do?
Pull over to let them pass
Some 2wy rds have turnout areas u can use or passing lanes
Taking hazards 1 @ a time ex.
What should u do if u wanna pass a bike but there’s an oncoming vehicle?
Slow, wait till the oncoming vehicle passes, then pass bike
Split dff. between hazards
Where in the lane should u drive w parked cars on one side & on oncoming vs on the other?
Ex. Drive center between parked & oncoming vehicles
If one is more dangerous than other leave a bit more space on dangerous side
Ex. If oncoming vehicle pulling tractor trailer give it xtra space
How can u avoid driving next 2 other vehicles on multi lane rds?
Move up, drop back or change lanes.
If conditions on 1 side change check the other
How should u give stopped emergency vehicles space on highways with @ least 4 lanes, @ least 2 moving ur direction?
Change lanes
Choose lane w most open space on either side of ur vehicle
How should u give stopped emergency vehicles space on highways/rds w less than 4 lanes?
Slow down & pass to left
How should u give stopped emergency vehicles space?
On highways w 4+ lanes change lanes
Less than 4 lanes pass to left
How big of a space do u need to merge into?
4+ sec gap
If other traffic is merging into ur lane what should u do?
Change lanes to give them space if safe
If moving multiple lanes over
Take them 1 @ a time
How can you avoid getting stuck partway across a rd etc?
Know for certain what drivers are doing b4 u proceed w decisions - turn signal ex.
Green light wait 4 anyone blocking u 2 clear
Check 4 ppl B4 turning left
Xing railrd tracks make sure can cross without stopping on tracks
What’s one way to tell if you’re at a safe distance from oncoming vehicles in the passingv lane to pass?
Far away vehicle generally looks like it’s still
If u can see that it’s approaching u may be too close 2 pass
If unsure wait till they’re gone
How many vehicles is it safe 2 pass at a time?
Only 1, don’t count on having time 2 pass multiple
How far from a hill/curve must u b 2 pass?
Mile/sec
Don’t pass within 1/3 mile/15 secs of hill/curve
Assume there’s an oncoming vehicle u can’t see over hill/around curve.
Is it ok to pass in intersections?
No
Intersections include railrds & shopping enterances
Before you pass check for these traffic & Rd conditions that might cause other drivers to move into ur lane:
- peds&bikes on Rd/shoulder
- narrow bridge/other reduced lane width
- ice, pothole, smth on Rd, uneven pavement
