How far ahead should u scan? Where is most important to scan either side of u?

Where on the steering wheel should ur hands be?
Steering posture why?
Left hand between 8 & 9 o clock
Right hand between 3 & 4 o clock
Keep both hands on wheel, don’t lean on arms, elbow out window etc bc u may be unable to react quickly
How far down Rd should u look?
@ least 15 secs down Rd, along w sides & rear
Pick stationary object u think it’ll take 15 secs to get to, count secs, & practice accuracy

Look 4 potential situations where u might need 2 steer b4 u get there
Be aware of sight blockages, u can look in, under & around parked cars for feet, shadows & movement

Hand over hand technique.
When finish turn, straighten steering wheel by hand, don’t let slip thru fingers

How close 2 other vehicles should u use low/high beams?
Low beams when within 500ft of oncoming vehicles
Low beams when ur following 300ft or less behind other vehicl
Should u use high or low beams in rain/snow/fog/?
Low beams even @ night so light doesn’t reflect off water
What lights should I use if stopped along rd @ night?
emergency flashers & low beams
What should u do if oncoming vehicle has high beams on?
look to right (shoulder) edge of rd
When should u tap ur horn lightly? (No immediate danger)
- ped/bike seems to be moving into ur lane
- passing a driver who starts turning into ur lane
- driver not paying attention or trouble seeing u
- can’t see what’s ahead; steep hill, sharp curve, exiting narrow alley etc
When should I sharply blast ur horn? (Immediate danger only)
- child/elder ab to enter st
- other vehicle might hit u
- lost control & moving towards someone
If car breaks down etc and u can’t pull over
- stop where clearly visible, not just over hill or around curve
- emergency flares 200-300ft behind vehicle, if no flares stand off Rd & wave traffic around ur car
- lift hood or tie white cloth to antenna/side mirror/door handle
What should you be scanning 4?
Rd or traffic conditions changing - if they change on 1 side check the other
Stopped/moving traffic
Red/green lights
If Rd curves or cresting hill
Around & under parked vehicles for feet, movement & shadows
Potholes, uneven pavement, anything in the rd, ice
What should u do if ped/bike seems to b moving into ur lane?
Lightly tap horn
What should u do if ur passing a driver and they start turning into ur lane?

What should u do if a driver isn’t paying attention or has trouble seeing u?
